On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 2:30 pm ET/8:30 am HT, U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) will lead a spotlight forum focused on the harmful consequences the Republicans’ “Big Beautiful Bill” will have on students, parents, teachers, and schools across the country. Specifically, the forum will highlight the school voucher-related provisions from the bill, which would divert billions of dollars in taxpayer funding to create the first ever national school voucher program by creating tax incentives for wealthy individuals to support scholarship granting organizations. These provisions passed the House, and are now being considered in the Senate. Individual states with school voucher programs have already seen deep cuts to essential programs, and the “Big Beautiful Bill” would further exacerbate these consequences by diverting crucial resources from public schools to wealthier families and private schools.
