WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety, will convene a subcommittee hearing titled “Shifting Gears: Issues Impacting the Trucking and Commercial Bus Industries in the U.S.” on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 10:00 am EST. This hearing will examine the trucking and motorcoach industries, with an emphasis on enhancing safety, reducing regulatory burdens, and ensuring the long-term viability of these essential transportation operators. This hearing will explore opportunities for meaningful regulatory and policy reforms, including consideration of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) regulations, workforce challenges, and enforcement and compliance requirements in the context of the next surface transportation reauthorization. Upon announcing this hearing, Sen. Young said: “The trucking and motorcoach industries are essential to Indiana’s economy and support thousands of Hoosier jobs. These drivers work long, demanding hours to keep our communities connected and our supply chains running. FMCSA plays a crucial role in ensuring safety on our roads while allowing these industries to thrive. This hearing is a chance to ensure policymakers pursue a thoughtful approach to legislating that strengthens our infrastructure, boosts economic growth, fosters industry innovation, and keeps America moving safely.” Sen. Cruz said: “America’s trucking and motorcoach industries are more than just transportation. They are the lifeblood of our economy, connecting supply chains, creating millions of jobs, and ensuring the efficient and timely delivery of goods. FMCSA has a clear responsibility to protect safety on our roads, but it must do so without placing unnecessary burdens on the very industries that keep America moving. As we consider legislation to reauthorize FMCSA, this hearing presents an important opportunity to get the facts, understand the challenges, and make sure we continue to empower businesses to innovate, enhance safety, and stand with the workers who keep this country moving.” Witnesses: Mr. Chris Spear, President and Chief Executive Officer, American Trucking Associations Mr. Lewie Pugh, Executive Vice President, Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Mr. Fred Ferguson, President and Chief Executive Officer, American Bus Association Mr. Sean O’Brien, General President, International Brotherhood of Teamsters
