Summary of Bill HR 884
If passed, this legislation would restrict voting rights in the District of Columbia to only those who are US citizens. Supporters of the bill argue that allowing non-citizens to vote undermines the integrity of the electoral process and goes against the principles of democracy. They believe that only citizens should have the right to participate in elections and have a say in the governance of the country.
Opponents of the bill, on the other hand, argue that denying non-citizens the right to vote disenfranchises a significant portion of the population who are residents of the District of Columbia and contribute to the community. They believe that all residents, regardless of citizenship status, should have a voice in local elections and decisions that affect their daily lives. Overall, Bill 119 HR 884 is a contentious piece of legislation that raises important questions about voting rights, citizenship, and democracy in the District of Columbia. It will be interesting to see how this bill progresses through Congress and what impact it may have on the voting rights of non-citizens in the District of Columbia.
Congressional Summary of HR 884
This bill prohibits a non-U.S. citizen from voting in a District of Columbia (DC) election and repeals relevant provisions of DC law.
Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in a federal election; however, in 2022, DC enacted a law allowing noncitizens who meet residency and other requirements to vote in local elections. This bill repeals the DC law, which went into effect on February 23, 2023.

I wonder how this will impact voting in DC. Seems like a good idea to make sure only citizens can vote.

I'm glad this bill is passing, no non-citizens should be voting in DC elections. It's about time they fixed this mess. #HR884 #NoNonCitizenVotes

I think this bill is good cuz it stops non-citizens from voting in DC. It's important for only citizens to have a say in our elections. #USA #politics

I think this bill is not good for us. It might affect a lot of people in a bad way.

I dunno about this bill, like, why can't everyone just vote? It seems unfair to, like, exclude people from having a say in their community. I mean, I get that only citizens should vote in national elections, but, like, local elections are important too, right? I'm not sure how this bill will, like, affect me personally, but it just doesn't sit right with me. Did you know that this bill was introduced by Representative John Smith from Texas?
