No Pay for Congress During Default or Shutdown Act
3/26/2025, 12:31 PM
Summary of Bill HR 1973
Bill 119 hr 1973, also known as the "Congressional Pay Reduction Act," aims to decrease the annual salary of Members of Congress in the event that the public debt limit is reached or a government shutdown occurs during a fiscal year. The bill proposes that if either of these situations were to occur, the pay of Members of Congress would be reduced until the issue is resolved.
The purpose of this bill is to hold Members of Congress accountable for their actions that lead to a government shutdown or reaching the public debt limit. By reducing their pay, it is intended to incentivize lawmakers to work towards finding a solution to these critical issues in a timely manner.
Overall, the Congressional Pay Reduction Act seeks to ensure that Members of Congress are directly impacted by the consequences of their decisions, and encourages them to prioritize the well-being of the country over political gridlock.
