Summary of Bill S 2139
The ALERT Act, also known as Bill 118 s 2139, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to enhance the security and safety of schools by requiring the Department of Homeland Security to establish a program to assist schools in developing emergency response plans.
Under the ALERT Act, schools would be required to conduct annual drills to test their emergency response plans and ensure that students and staff are prepared in the event of a crisis. The bill also calls for the creation of a national clearinghouse of best practices for school safety and security, which would provide schools with resources and guidance on how to improve their emergency preparedness.
Additionally, the ALERT Act would authorize grants to schools to help them implement security measures, such as installing security cameras, hiring security personnel, and implementing other safety protocols. These grants would be distributed based on a school's level of need and their ability to demonstrate a commitment to improving their emergency response capabilities. Overall, the ALERT Act aims to improve the safety and security of schools across the country by providing them with the resources and support they need to effectively respond to emergencies. This bill has garnered bipartisan support in Congress and is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring the well-being of students and staff in schools.
