3/13/2024, 7:10 PM

Summary of Bill S 1851

The Midwives for MOMS Act of 2023, also known as Bill 118 s 1851, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to improve access to midwifery care for pregnant individuals in underserved communities.

The bill aims to achieve this goal by providing funding for midwifery education and training programs, as well as increasing the availability of midwifery services in rural and low-income areas. Additionally, the bill seeks to expand Medicaid coverage for midwifery services, making it easier for individuals to access this type of care.

Proponents of the Midwives for MOMS Act argue that midwifery care can improve maternal and infant health outcomes, particularly for marginalized populations. By increasing access to midwifery services, the bill aims to reduce disparities in maternal and infant mortality rates. Opponents of the bill may argue that expanding Medicaid coverage for midwifery services could increase healthcare costs. However, supporters of the bill contend that the long-term benefits of improved maternal and infant health outcomes outweigh any potential short-term costs. Overall, the Midwives for MOMS Act of 2023 is a bipartisan effort to improve access to midwifery care for pregnant individuals in underserved communities. If passed, this legislation has the potential to positively impact maternal and infant health outcomes across the United States.
