RAISE Act of 2023
3/12/2024, 8:32 AM
Summary of Bill S 1584
Under the RAISE Act, the current system of family-based immigration would be replaced with a points-based system that gives preference to immigrants with high levels of education, job skills, and English proficiency. This would mean that immigrants who are able to contribute to the US economy and society in a significant way would be given priority in the immigration process.
Additionally, the bill aims to reduce the overall number of immigrants allowed into the country each year by cutting back on certain categories of visas, such as the diversity visa lottery and certain family-based visas. This is intended to ensure that the US is able to better control its immigration levels and focus on admitting immigrants who can make a positive impact on the country. Overall, the RAISE Act of 2023 represents a significant shift in US immigration policy towards a more merit-based system that prioritizes high-skilled immigrants. Supporters of the bill argue that this will benefit the US economy and society by bringing in individuals who can contribute in a meaningful way, while critics argue that it may limit opportunities for certain groups of immigrants and go against the country's tradition of welcoming immigrants from diverse backgrounds.
