Summary of Bill HR 2690
Bill 118 hr 2690, also known as the Ending PUSHOUT Act of 2023, aims to address the issue of discriminatory and harmful practices in schools that disproportionately impact marginalized students, particularly students of color, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ students. The bill seeks to end the practice of pushing students out of school through suspensions, expulsions, and other disciplinary actions that result in students being excluded from the educational environment.
The Ending PUSHOUT Act of 2023 includes provisions to promote positive school climates, provide support for students who have experienced trauma, and implement restorative justice practices as alternatives to punitive disciplinary measures. The bill also calls for increased training for school personnel on issues related to bias, discrimination, and cultural competency.
Additionally, the bill addresses the issue of school resource officers and their role in contributing to the school-to-prison pipeline. It calls for the removal of law enforcement from schools and the reallocation of funds towards mental health services, counseling, and other supportive resources for students. Overall, the Ending PUSHOUT Act of 2023 seeks to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all students, with a focus on addressing systemic inequalities and promoting positive outcomes for marginalized populations.
