3/9/2024, 8:15 AM
Summary of Bill HR 1235
The Federal Firefighter Pay Equity Act, also known as Bill 118 hr 1235, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to address the issue of pay disparities between federal firefighters and other federal employees.
The bill aims to ensure that federal firefighters are paid fairly for their work by adjusting their pay scale to be more in line with other federal employees who perform similar duties. This would help to recognize the unique and dangerous nature of firefighting work and provide federal firefighters with the compensation they deserve.
The Federal Firefighter Pay Equity Act has garnered bipartisan support in Congress, with lawmakers from both parties recognizing the importance of ensuring fair pay for federal firefighters. Supporters of the bill argue that federal firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect the public and should be compensated accordingly. If passed, the Federal Firefighter Pay Equity Act would have a significant impact on the lives of federal firefighters across the country, ensuring that they are fairly compensated for their important and often dangerous work.

Congressional Summary of HR 1235
Federal Firefighter Pay Equity Act
This bill modifies certain pay calculations that are used to determine retirement and annuity benefits for federal firefighters.
Specifically, the bill adjusts the method of determining the average pay of a federal firefighter by adding one-half of a firefighter's basic hourly rate multiplied by the number of overtime hours included as part of such firefighter's regular tour of duty. It also requires the Office of Personnel Management to issue regulations that cap the number of hours in a regular workweek, which may not exceed 60 hours per week.
