12/30/2022, 12:18 AM
Summary of Bill HR 7904
Bill 117 HR 7904, also known as the Multiple Firearm Sales Reporting Modernization Act of 2022, aims to update and modernize the reporting requirements for multiple firearm sales. The bill requires licensed firearm dealers to report to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) any sale of two or more handguns to the same individual within a five-day period.
The purpose of this legislation is to help law enforcement agencies track and prevent illegal firearms trafficking by identifying individuals who may be purchasing multiple firearms for the purpose of selling them on the black market. By requiring dealers to report these transactions to the ATF, authorities can more effectively investigate and prosecute individuals engaged in illegal firearms trafficking.
The bill also includes provisions to protect the privacy of law-abiding gun owners, ensuring that the information collected by the ATF is used solely for law enforcement purposes and is not shared with any other government agencies or used to create a national firearms registry. Overall, the Multiple Firearm Sales Reporting Modernization Act of 2022 seeks to strike a balance between protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners and preventing the illegal trafficking of firearms. It is designed to enhance public safety and support law enforcement efforts to combat gun violence in the United States.
