12/29/2022, 9:48 PM
Summary of Bill HR 6982
Bill 117 HR 6982, also known as the Public Lands Telecommunications Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to streamline the process for permitting and siting telecommunications facilities on public lands.
The bill aims to improve access to broadband and other telecommunications services in rural and underserved areas by making it easier for companies to build and maintain infrastructure on federal lands. This includes national parks, forests, and other public lands managed by agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service.
Specifically, the Public Lands Telecommunications Act would establish a single permitting process for telecommunications facilities on public lands, reducing the bureaucratic hurdles that currently exist. It would also require federal agencies to prioritize applications for telecommunications facilities in order to expedite the approval process. Additionally, the bill includes provisions to ensure that any telecommunications facilities built on public lands comply with environmental regulations and do not harm the natural resources or wildlife in the area. It also requires companies to pay fair market value for the use of public lands for their facilities. Overall, the Public Lands Telecommunications Act is aimed at promoting the expansion of telecommunications infrastructure in rural and underserved areas while also protecting the environment and natural resources on public lands. It is currently being debated in Congress and may undergo further revisions before being voted on.
