Defund de Blasio’s Injection Sites Act of 2021
12/30/2022, 3:04 AM
Summary of Bill HR 6159
Bill 117 HR 6159, also known as the Defund de Blasio's Injection Sites Act of 2021, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The bill aims to defund any supervised injection sites that may be established in New York City under the leadership of Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Supervised injection sites are facilities where individuals can use drugs under the supervision of medical professionals, with the goal of reducing the harm associated with drug use, such as overdose deaths and the spread of diseases like HIV and hepatitis. These sites have been a topic of debate in many cities across the country, with proponents arguing that they can save lives and reduce the burden on emergency services, while opponents argue that they enable drug use and send the wrong message.
The Defund de Blasio's Injection Sites Act of 2021 seeks to prevent any federal funding from being used to support the establishment or operation of supervised injection sites in New York City. The bill is likely to face opposition from those who support harm reduction strategies for drug use, as well as from advocates for local control over public health initiatives. Overall, the bill reflects the ongoing debate over how best to address the opioid epidemic and other drug-related issues in the United States, with differing opinions on the most effective approaches to reducing harm and saving lives.
