RECA Extension Act of 2024
5/16/2024, 12:53 PM
Summary of Bill HR 8097
The RECA Extension Act of 2024 seeks to extend the eligibility period for individuals to file claims under the RECA program. Currently, individuals must have been exposed to radiation between specific dates in order to qualify for compensation. This bill would extend those dates to ensure that more individuals who were affected by radiation exposure are able to receive the compensation they deserve.
Additionally, the RECA Extension Act of 2024 includes provisions to increase the maximum amount of compensation that individuals can receive under the RECA program. This increase in compensation aims to better reflect the costs and damages incurred by individuals who were exposed to radiation. Overall, the RECA Extension Act of 2024 is a bipartisan effort to ensure that individuals who were affected by radiation exposure during the Cold War are properly compensated for their suffering. This bill aims to extend the eligibility period and increase the compensation available to these individuals, providing them with the support they need and deserve.
Congressional Summary of HR 8097
RECA Extension Act of 2024
This bill extends the authorization of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) fund and the statute of limitations for filing a claim under RECA until two years after the date of the bill's enactment.
RECA provides restitution to uranium miners and other individuals who may have developed cancer or other specified diseases after being exposed to radiation released from atomic weapons testing or uranium mining, milling, or transportation in connection with U.S. nuclear weapons programs.
Under current law, the fund is authorized until June 7, 2024, and the statute of limitations requires all claims under RECA to be filed no later than June 7, 2024. (Because the statute of limitations expires on a Saturday, the Department of Justice has announced that it will process all applications postmarked by June 10, 2024.)
