As a 26 year old female Democrat from Idaho, I cannot support this resolution honoring the life of Hays, Kansas police sergeant Scott Heimann. While I understand the desire to honor those who serve and protect our communities, I believe that this resolution fails to address the systemic issues within law enforcement that have led to the unjust treatment of marginalized communities. Instead of focusing on individual officers, we should be working towards comprehensive police reform that holds law enforcement accountable for their actions and addresses the root causes of police violence. This resolution feels like a band-aid solution that ignores the larger issues at play. Who truly benefits from this resolution honoring Sergeant Heimann's life? And how does it address the concerns of those who have been negatively impacted by police brutality? These are questions that need to be answered before we can truly move forward in creating a more just and equitable society.
