Summary of Bill S 575

Bill 119 s 575, also known as the "Improving Access to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses Act," aims to make it easier for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to provide services under the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The bill seeks to amend titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act to expand the scope of practice for APRNs, allowing them to provide a wider range of services to patients.

The main goal of the bill is to increase access to healthcare services for individuals enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid by allowing APRNs to practice to the full extent of their education and training. This would include allowing APRNs to prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests, and provide other essential healthcare services without the need for physician supervision.

Supporters of the bill argue that expanding the role of APRNs will help address healthcare provider shortages, particularly in underserved rural and urban areas. By allowing APRNs to provide more services, patients will have greater access to care and may experience improved health outcomes. Opponents of the bill have raised concerns about patient safety and the quality of care provided by APRNs without physician oversight. They argue that APRNs do not have the same level of training and experience as physicians and should not be granted the same level of autonomy in their practice. Overall, Bill 119 s 575 is a contentious piece of legislation that has sparked debate among lawmakers, healthcare providers, and patient advocacy groups. The bill's fate remains uncertain as it continues to make its way through the legislative process.
