MAPLE Act
2/6/2025, 1:08 AM
Summary of Bill S 57
Bill 119 s 57, also known as the Maple Syrup Inclusion Act, is a proposed amendment to the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002. The purpose of this bill is to expand the Seniors Farmers' Market Nutrition Program to include maple syrup as an eligible product for participants.
The Seniors Farmers' Market Nutrition Program is a federal initiative that provides low-income seniors with coupons that can be used to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs at farmers' markets. This program aims to improve the health and nutrition of seniors while also supporting local farmers.
If passed, the Maple Syrup Inclusion Act would allow seniors to use their coupons to purchase maple syrup at participating farmers' markets. Maple syrup is a natural sweetener that is rich in antioxidants and essential minerals, making it a healthy and delicious addition to seniors' diets. Supporters of the bill argue that including maple syrup in the Seniors Farmers' Market Nutrition Program would benefit both seniors and maple syrup producers. Seniors would have access to a wider variety of nutritious foods, while maple syrup producers would have a new market for their products. Overall, the Maple Syrup Inclusion Act aims to promote the health and well-being of seniors while also supporting the agricultural industry. It is currently being considered by Congress and has garnered bipartisan support.
