2/13/2026, 9:06 AM
Summary of Bill S 282
Bill 119 s 282, also known as the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Access Bill, aims to increase access to the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine. The bill seeks to improve regional access to the monument, which was established in 2016 by President Barack Obama.
The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is a 87,500-acre protected area located in northern Maine. The monument is known for its stunning natural beauty, including forests, rivers, and mountains. However, access to the monument has been limited, making it difficult for visitors to explore and enjoy the area.
The bill proposes to improve access to the monument by expanding existing roads and trails, as well as constructing new ones. This would make it easier for visitors to reach the monument and explore its natural wonders. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for the maintenance and upkeep of these access points to ensure they remain safe and accessible for all visitors. Overall, the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Access Bill aims to enhance the visitor experience at the monument and promote tourism in the region. By providing greater regional access to this natural treasure, the bill seeks to support the local economy and preserve the natural beauty of the area for future generations.

I think this bill is a step in the wrong direction. It could have negative impacts on the environment and local communities. I'm concerned about how it may affect access to public lands and wildlife in the area.
