Summary of Bill S 1042

Bill 119 s 1042, also known as the Wildfire Smoke Exposure Research for Wine Grapes Act, is a proposed piece of legislation that aims to address the impact of wildfire smoke exposure on wine grapes. The bill specifically mandates the Agricultural Research Service to conduct research on this issue in order to better understand the effects of wildfire smoke on wine grape production.

The research conducted under this bill will focus on studying the various ways in which wildfire smoke exposure can affect wine grapes, including the potential impact on grape quality and flavor. By gaining a better understanding of these effects, researchers hope to develop strategies to mitigate the negative consequences of wildfire smoke exposure on wine grape production.

In addition to studying the effects of wildfire smoke on wine grapes, the bill also aims to explore potential solutions to help wine grape growers protect their crops from smoke exposure. This could include developing new technologies or practices to minimize the impact of wildfire smoke on grape production. Overall, the Wildfire Smoke Exposure Research for Wine Grapes Act seeks to provide valuable information and resources to the wine grape industry in order to help growers better navigate the challenges posed by wildfire smoke exposure. By conducting research on this issue, the Agricultural Research Service hopes to support the sustainability and success of the wine grape industry in the face of increasing wildfire activity.

Congressional Summary of S 1042

Smoke Exposure Research Act of 2025

This bill directs the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to conduct research relating to smoke exposure and wine grapes. This research must be done in coordination with land-grant colleges and universities that are located in California, Oregon, and Washington and have researched the effects of smoke exposure on viticulture and enology operations and practices.

Specifically, ARS must

  • conduct research to identify the compounds responsible for smoke taint,
  • conduct research to establish standard methodologies for sampling and testing smoke-exposed wine grapes and smoke-affected wines,
  • establish a reliable database of background levels of smoke taint compounds that occur naturally in wine grapes,
  • develop risk assessment tools or mitigation methods to reduce or eliminate smoke taint, and
  • study compounds that can act as a barrier between wine grapes and smoke compounds.

I think this bill is a good idea because wildfires can really mess up wine grapes and that's not cool. Researching how smoke exposure affects them is important so we can keep enjoying our wine. I'm all for it!
