Summary of Bill HR 1146
Bill 119 HR 1146, also known as the "To prohibit Federal funding for National Public Radio, and for other purposes" bill, aims to eliminate federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR). The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on February 16, 2021 by Representative Doug Lamborn from Colorado.
The main purpose of the bill is to prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to support NPR, arguing that the organization has a liberal bias and should not receive government funding. The bill specifically targets the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides funding to NPR and other public broadcasting entities.
If passed, the bill would prohibit any federal funds from being used to support NPR or any of its affiliates. This would include funding for programming, operations, or any other expenses related to NPR. The bill also includes provisions for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to return any unspent funds to the Treasury. Supporters of the bill argue that NPR should not be receiving taxpayer dollars, as it is a private organization that can support itself through other means, such as donations and sponsorships. They also believe that NPR's programming is biased and does not represent the views of all Americans. Opponents of the bill argue that NPR provides valuable programming and news coverage that is not available through other media outlets. They believe that cutting off federal funding would harm NPR's ability to provide quality journalism and diverse perspectives to the public. As of now, the bill has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for further consideration. It remains to be seen whether it will gain enough support to pass both the House and the Senate and become law.
