Bill 118 s 251, also known as the Stop Supreme Court Leakers Act of 2023, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress with the aim of addressing leaks of confidential information from the Supreme Court. The bill seeks to establish stricter penalties for individuals who leak sensitive information from the Supreme Court, in order to protect the integrity and confidentiality of the Court's proceedings.
Under the provisions of the bill, individuals found guilty of leaking confidential information from the Supreme Court could face fines and imprisonment. The bill also includes measures to enhance security protocols within the Supreme Court to prevent future leaks from occurring.
Supporters of the bill argue that leaks of confidential information from the Supreme Court can undermine the credibility of the Court and compromise the fairness of its decisions. They believe that stronger penalties for leakers will deter individuals from engaging in such behavior in the future. Opponents of the bill, however, raise concerns about potential infringement on freedom of speech and press freedom. They argue that whistleblowers who expose wrongdoing within the Supreme Court should be protected, rather than punished. Overall, the Stop Supreme Court Leakers Act of 2023 is a controversial piece of legislation that aims to address leaks of confidential information from the Supreme Court. Its impact on freedom of speech and press freedom, as well as its effectiveness in deterring leaks, remain subjects of debate among lawmakers and the public.
