DRUG Act
3/12/2024, 4:55 AM
Summary of Bill S 1542
The Drug Importation and Safety Act, also known as Bill 118 s 1542 or the DRUG Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The main goal of this bill is to address the issue of high prescription drug prices in the United States by allowing for the importation of cheaper prescription drugs from other countries.
Under the DRUG Act, the Secretary of Health and Human Services would be authorized to create a program that would allow for the importation of prescription drugs from Canada, as long as certain safety and quality standards are met. This program would be available to both individuals and pharmacies, with the goal of providing Americans with access to more affordable medications.
In addition to allowing for drug importation, the DRUG Act also includes provisions aimed at increasing transparency in drug pricing. Pharmaceutical companies would be required to disclose information about the costs of producing and marketing their drugs, as well as any price increases that exceed a certain threshold. Overall, the DRUG Act is intended to address the issue of high prescription drug prices in the United States by allowing for the importation of cheaper drugs from other countries and increasing transparency in drug pricing. It remains to be seen whether this legislation will be passed by Congress and signed into law.
