12/15/2023, 4:03 PM
Summary of Bill HR 5980
Bill 118 hr 5980, also known as the Resilient Transit Act of 2023, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress with the aim of improving the resilience of public transportation systems across the country. The bill focuses on providing funding and support for transit agencies to better prepare for and respond to natural disasters, extreme weather events, and other emergencies that may disrupt transit services.
One key aspect of the Resilient Transit Act is the establishment of a grant program to assist transit agencies in implementing resilience measures. This includes investing in infrastructure upgrades, such as elevating tracks or stations to prevent flooding, installing backup power systems, and improving communication and coordination with emergency response agencies.
The bill also emphasizes the importance of incorporating climate change considerations into transit planning and design. This includes conducting vulnerability assessments, developing adaptation strategies, and integrating resilience into long-term transportation planning efforts. Furthermore, the Resilient Transit Act seeks to promote equity and accessibility in transit resilience efforts. The bill includes provisions to ensure that low-income and underserved communities are not disproportionately impacted by disasters and that transit services remain accessible to all residents, regardless of income or ability. Overall, the Resilient Transit Act of 2023 aims to strengthen the ability of public transportation systems to withstand and recover from emergencies, while also promoting sustainability, equity, and accessibility in transit planning and operations.
