No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act
1/4/2025, 11:12 AM
Summary of Bill HR 3387
Bill 118 hr 3387, also known as the No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act, aims to protect new mothers from unexpected medical bills during and after childbirth. The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on June 25, 2021, by Representative Lauren Underwood from Illinois.
The main purpose of this legislation is to prevent new mothers from receiving surprise medical bills for out-of-network care during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. This often occurs when a mother receives care from a healthcare provider who is not covered by her insurance plan, leading to unexpected and costly bills.
Under the No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act, healthcare providers would be required to inform pregnant women of their network status and any potential out-of-network charges before providing care. This would give new mothers the opportunity to make informed decisions about their healthcare and avoid financial surprises. Additionally, the bill would establish a process for resolving billing disputes between healthcare providers and insurance companies, ensuring that new mothers are not held responsible for excessive charges. This would provide much-needed protection for new mothers who are already facing the physical and emotional challenges of childbirth. Overall, the No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act seeks to improve transparency and accountability in maternity care, ensuring that new mothers are not burdened with unexpected medical bills during a vulnerable time in their lives.
