Summary of Bill HR 2738

Bill 118 hr 2738, also known as the Make the Migrant Protection Protocols Mandatory Act of 2023, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The main purpose of this bill is to make the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) mandatory for all migrants seeking asylum in the United States.

The Migrant Protection Protocols, also known as the "Remain in Mexico" policy, require asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases are processed in US immigration courts. This policy was implemented by the Trump administration in 2019 and has been controversial due to concerns about the safety and well-being of migrants forced to wait in dangerous conditions.

If passed, this bill would make it mandatory for all asylum seekers to be subject to the MPP, regardless of their country of origin or circumstances. Proponents of the bill argue that this policy is necessary to deter fraudulent asylum claims and reduce the strain on US immigration resources. Opponents of the bill argue that the MPP violates international law and puts vulnerable migrants at risk. They argue that the US should focus on improving the asylum process and providing support to those fleeing violence and persecution. Overall, the Make the Migrant Protection Protocols Mandatory Act of 2023 is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to address the issue of asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border. It is currently being debated in Congress, and its outcome remains uncertain.
