BAH Restoration Act
3/8/2024, 8:15 AM
Summary of Bill HR 2537
The Bill 118 hr 2537, also known as the BAH Restoration Act, aims to restore Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates for military service members to pre-2015 levels. The BAH is a monthly allowance provided to service members to assist with housing costs when they are not living in government-provided housing.
The legislation was introduced in response to concerns that the 2015 changes to the BAH calculation formula resulted in lower rates for many service members, particularly those living in high-cost areas. Supporters of the bill argue that the reduced BAH rates have made it difficult for service members to afford suitable housing for themselves and their families.
If passed, the BAH Restoration Act would require the Department of Defense to revert to the previous BAH calculation formula and adjust rates accordingly. This would effectively increase the BAH rates for many service members, providing them with additional financial support to cover housing expenses. The bill has garnered bipartisan support in Congress, with lawmakers from both parties recognizing the importance of ensuring that service members receive adequate compensation for their housing needs. Proponents of the bill argue that restoring BAH rates to pre-2015 levels is a necessary step to support the well-being of military families and maintain readiness within the armed forces. Overall, the BAH Restoration Act seeks to address concerns about the affordability of housing for service members and their families by restoring BAH rates to previous levels. If passed, the legislation would provide much-needed financial relief to military personnel facing housing challenges.
