Summary of Bill HR 1772

Bill 118 hr 1772, also known as the WHEELChairs on Airplanes Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities who use wheelchairs when traveling on airplanes.

The bill requires airlines to ensure that all aircraft have a designated space to stow wheelchairs during flights. This space must be large enough to accommodate a variety of wheelchair sizes and types. Additionally, airlines must develop and implement procedures for safely securing wheelchairs during takeoff, landing, and turbulence.

Furthermore, the WHEELChairs on Airplanes Act mandates that airlines provide training to flight attendants and other staff on how to assist passengers with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs. This training must cover proper techniques for transferring passengers to and from their wheelchairs, as well as how to operate any necessary equipment. In order to ensure compliance with these requirements, the bill authorizes the Department of Transportation to conduct inspections and enforce penalties for airlines that fail to meet the standards outlined in the legislation. Overall, the WHEELChairs on Airplanes Act aims to make air travel more accessible and comfortable for individuals with disabilities who rely on wheelchairs. By establishing clear guidelines and procedures for accommodating passengers with disabilities, this bill seeks to promote inclusivity and equal access to air travel for all Americans.
