12/15/2023, 3:54 PM
Summary of Bill HR 1160
The Critical Electric Infrastructure Cybersecurity Incident Reporting Act, also known as Bill 118 hr 1160, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to enhance the cybersecurity of critical electric infrastructure by requiring incident reporting to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Under this bill, owners and operators of critical electric infrastructure, such as power plants and transmission lines, would be required to report any cybersecurity incidents to the DHS within 72 hours of discovering the incident. These incidents could include cyber attacks, data breaches, or other malicious activities that could compromise the security of the electric grid.
The DHS would then be responsible for analyzing and responding to these incident reports, as well as sharing relevant information with other federal agencies and industry stakeholders. This information sharing is intended to improve the overall cybersecurity posture of the electric grid and prevent future attacks. Overall, the Critical Electric Infrastructure Cybersecurity Incident Reporting Act aims to strengthen the resilience of the nation's electric infrastructure against cyber threats. By requiring incident reporting and information sharing, this bill seeks to enhance the coordination and response capabilities of both government and industry stakeholders in the event of a cybersecurity incident.
