Summary of Bill HR 8821

Bill 117 hr 8821, also known as the IDs for an Inclusive Democracy Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The main goal of this bill is to ensure that all eligible voters have access to a valid form of identification in order to participate in the democratic process.

The bill proposes several key provisions to achieve this goal. Firstly, it mandates that all states must provide free government-issued photo IDs to any eligible voter who requests one. This is aimed at addressing the issue of voter suppression, particularly among marginalized communities who may face barriers to obtaining identification.

Additionally, the bill requires states to accept a broader range of identification forms at polling places, including student IDs, tribal IDs, and utility bills with a voter's name and address. This is intended to make it easier for individuals who may not have a government-issued ID to still be able to vote. Furthermore, the bill includes provisions for funding to assist states in implementing these new requirements, as well as measures to ensure the security and integrity of the identification process. Overall, the IDs for an Inclusive Democracy Act seeks to promote greater inclusivity and accessibility in the voting process, ensuring that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

Such ID must include a photograph and specified information, as well as security features. It shall be valid for a 10-year period. To receive an ID, an individual must be at least 14 years of age.

The SSA must develop and implement a campaign to educate the public with respect to the ID, including how an individual can receive and use it.
