12/29/2022, 5:18 PM
Summary of Bill HR 8154
Bill 117 HR 8154, also known as the Facial Recognition Ban on Body Cameras Act, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to prohibit the use of facial recognition technology on body cameras worn by law enforcement officers.
The bill aims to address concerns about the potential misuse of facial recognition technology, particularly in the context of policing. Proponents of the bill argue that the use of facial recognition on body cameras could infringe on individuals' privacy rights and lead to discriminatory practices.
If passed, the Facial Recognition Ban on Body Cameras Act would require law enforcement agencies to disable any facial recognition capabilities on their body cameras. It would also prohibit the use of federal funds to purchase or use body cameras equipped with facial recognition technology. Supporters of the bill believe that it is necessary to protect the civil liberties of individuals and prevent the misuse of technology by law enforcement. However, opponents argue that facial recognition technology can be a valuable tool for identifying suspects and solving crimes. Overall, the Facial Recognition Ban on Body Cameras Act is a controversial piece of legislation that raises important questions about the balance between public safety and individual privacy rights. It remains to be seen how Congress will ultimately decide on this issue.
