12/29/2022, 11:18 PM
Summary of Bill HR 7597
Bill 117 HR 7597, also known as the PFAS Firefighter Protection Act, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The bill aims to address the issue of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure among firefighters.
PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that have been linked to various health risks, including cancer and immune system disorders. Firefighters are particularly at risk of exposure to PFAS due to the use of firefighting foam and gear that contain these chemicals.
The PFAS Firefighter Protection Act seeks to protect firefighters from the harmful effects of PFAS by requiring the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish guidelines for the safe disposal of firefighting gear and equipment that contain PFAS. The bill also calls for the development of alternative firefighting foams that do not contain PFAS. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for the monitoring and testing of PFAS levels in firefighters and the establishment of a grant program to help fire departments replace PFAS-containing gear with safer alternatives. Overall, the PFAS Firefighter Protection Act aims to safeguard the health and well-being of firefighters by reducing their exposure to harmful PFAS chemicals.
