Open Schools Act
12/30/2022, 3:33 AM
Summary of Bill HR 6380
One of the key provisions of the Open Schools Act is the requirement for schools to publish detailed information about their academic performance, including standardized test scores, graduation rates, and college acceptance rates. This information would be easily accessible to parents, students, and the general public, allowing for greater transparency and accountability in the education system.
Additionally, the bill also includes provisions for schools to disclose information about their disciplinary policies and practices, as well as information about the qualifications and experience of their teachers and staff. This information would help parents and students make more informed decisions about which schools to attend and would also help identify areas where improvements may be needed. Overall, the Open Schools Act aims to improve the quality of education in the United States by promoting transparency and accountability in the education system. By requiring schools to disclose important information about their performance and practices, the bill seeks to empower parents and students to make more informed decisions about their education and to hold schools accountable for their performance.
Congressional Summary of HR 6380
Open Schools Act
This bill directs the Department of Education to make grants to parents of eligible students for certain education-related expenses. Eligible student refers to a student who is enrolled for the 2021-2022 school year in an elementary or secondary school that (1) is located in a local educational agency that received certain COVID-19 relief funds; and (2) does not provide, for any reason related to COVID-19, in-person learning for each enrolled student for each school day during the school year.
Grant funds may be used to pay the tuition and fees for a private elementary or secondary school, pay the cost of attending a public school that provides in-person learning, or for other expenses and educational materials.
