Bill 117 hr 6090, also known as the District of Columbia Government Accountability Office Home Rule Act, is a piece of legislation that aims to increase oversight and accountability in the District of Columbia government. The bill proposes to establish a Government Accountability Office (GAO) within the District of Columbia government to conduct audits and investigations of the city's finances, operations, and programs.
The GAO would be responsible for ensuring that taxpayer dollars are being spent efficiently and effectively, and that government programs are achieving their intended goals. The bill also includes provisions for the GAO to report its findings to the Mayor, City Council, and Congress, as well as to make recommendations for improving government operations.
Additionally, the bill seeks to strengthen the independence of the GAO by ensuring that its employees are not subject to political influence or interference. The GAO would be led by a Director appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council, and would have the authority to hire staff and conduct investigations independently. Overall, the District of Columbia Government Accountability Office Home Rule Act aims to improve transparency, accountability, and oversight in the District of Columbia government, in order to better serve the residents of the city and ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used responsibly.
