Summary of Bill HR 5940
Bill 117 HR 5940, also known as the Paul Laurence Dunbar Commemorative Coin Act, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The bill aims to honor the legacy of Paul Laurence Dunbar, a prominent African American poet, novelist, and playwright from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
If passed, the bill would authorize the minting and issuance of commemorative coins in honor of Paul Laurence Dunbar. These coins would be available for purchase by the public and collectors, with a portion of the proceeds going towards supporting the work of the Dunbar House State Memorial in Dayton, Ohio, where Dunbar lived for a portion of his life.
The bill has received bipartisan support in Congress, with lawmakers from both parties recognizing the importance of honoring Dunbar's contributions to American literature and culture. Supporters of the bill argue that commemorating Dunbar with a coin would help raise awareness of his work and legacy, particularly among younger generations. Overall, the Paul Laurence Dunbar Commemorative Coin Act seeks to celebrate the life and achievements of a trailblazing African American writer and bring attention to his lasting impact on American literature.
