Summary of Bill HR 3017

Bill 117 HR 3017, also known as the BIAS Act of 2021, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to address bias and discrimination in law enforcement by requiring the Department of Justice to collect data on the use of force by federal law enforcement officers, as well as data on the race, ethnicity, gender, and age of individuals who are subjected to the use of force.

The BIAS Act of 2021 also aims to improve transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies by requiring the Department of Justice to publish an annual report on the use of force by federal law enforcement officers. This report would include information on the number of incidents of use of force, the demographics of individuals involved, and any disciplinary actions taken against officers involved in these incidents.

Additionally, the BIAS Act of 2021 would establish a grant program to support law enforcement agencies in implementing bias training programs for officers. These programs would focus on recognizing and addressing bias in policing, with the goal of reducing the use of force and improving community relations. Overall, the BIAS Act of 2021 seeks to address issues of bias and discrimination within law enforcement by promoting transparency, accountability, and training for officers. It is currently being reviewed by Congress and may undergo changes before being voted on.
