Summary of Bill HR 592
Bill 119 HR 592, also known as the "Milk in Schools Act," aims to amend the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act to provide more options for the types of milk offered in school lunch programs. Currently, the school lunch program only allows for low-fat and fat-free milk options, excluding whole milk from being served.
The proposed bill seeks to expand the types of milk that can be offered in schools to include whole milk, as well as flavored whole milk. This change is intended to provide students with more choices and ensure that they are receiving the nutrients they need to support their growth and development.
In addition to expanding milk options, the bill also includes provisions to ensure that schools are able to purchase milk from local dairy producers, supporting local agriculture and promoting economic growth in rural communities. Overall, the Milk in Schools Act aims to improve the nutritional quality of school lunches by offering a wider variety of milk options to students, while also supporting local dairy producers and promoting economic development in rural areas.
