Summary of Bill HR 2116
Bill 117 HR 2116, also known as the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act of 2022, aims to address discrimination based on natural hairstyles, particularly targeting Black individuals. The bill seeks to prohibit discrimination in employment, education, housing, and public accommodations based on an individual's natural hair texture or protective hairstyles such as braids, twists, and locs.
The legislation acknowledges that natural hair is a significant part of many Black individuals' cultural identity and expression, and should be protected from discrimination. The bill also recognizes that discrimination based on natural hairstyles can have negative impacts on individuals' self-esteem, mental health, and economic opportunities.
If passed, the bill would require employers, schools, landlords, and public accommodations to update their policies to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on natural hairstyles. It would also provide avenues for individuals to file complaints and seek legal recourse if they experience discrimination based on their natural hair.
Overall, the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act of 2022 aims to promote inclusivity, diversity, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their natural hair texture or style.
