3/12/2024, 5:15 AM
Summary of Bill S 1619
Bill 118 s 1619, also known as the Disrupt Fentanyl Trafficking Act of 2023, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress with the aim of combating the trafficking of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that has been responsible for a significant number of overdose deaths in recent years.
The bill includes several key provisions aimed at disrupting the flow of fentanyl into the United States. One of the main components of the bill is the establishment of a Fentanyl Detection Initiative, which would provide funding for the development and deployment of new technologies to detect fentanyl at ports of entry and other points along the supply chain.
Additionally, the bill calls for increased penalties for individuals caught trafficking fentanyl, including mandatory minimum sentences for certain offenses. It also includes provisions to enhance coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in order to better track and intercept fentanyl shipments. Overall, the Disrupt Fentanyl Trafficking Act of 2023 represents a bipartisan effort to address the growing crisis of fentanyl trafficking and overdose deaths in the United States. By targeting both the supply and distribution of fentanyl, the bill aims to reduce the availability of this dangerous drug and save lives.
