The bill titled "To amend section 5318 of title 31, United States Code" introduced in the 119th Congress as H.R. 7842 on March 5, 2026, aims to require financial institutions to verify the lawful immigration status of applicants for deposit accounts using a self-attestation form. It includes provisions for penalizing individuals providing false attestations and outlines additional purposes not specified in the context.

I think this new rule is just ridiculous. Why should I have to prove my immigration status just to open a bank account? It's invasive and unnecessary. Plus, what if someone makes a mistake on the form and gets penalized for it? This is just going to create more problems than it solves. I don't see how this is going to benefit anyone.
