Due to the urgent warnings many of us have received from Ukraine, UCCA hosted a special webinar on Tuesday, 28 December. UCCA appreciates the responsiveness our UCCA National Council member organizations the Center for U.S.-Ukrainian Relations, the Organization for Defense of Four Freedoms of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian American Freedom Foundation in organizing this event. In addition to UCCA President Andriy Futey and Vice-President Michael Sawkiw, Jr., important information about the state of Russia's forces readying for war against Ukraine was be explained to participants by former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Gen. Wesley Clark (ret.) and President of The Potomac Foundation, Dr. Phillip Karber. As part of this webinar, UCCA provided a summary of the latest U.S. legislative initiatives that can aid Ukraine at this time: UCCA issued their statement - What Strategic Partners Do (electronic version here: https://mailchi.mp/05240b5156c6/strategic-partnership-2021) on December 8, which reiterated our community’s stated objectives following the phone call between President Biden and Putin on December 7. The Congressional Ukraine Caucus issued a statement on the same day (electronic version here: https://quigley.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/quigley-congressional-ukraine-caucus-urge-biden-increase-defense-ukraine). Also, Senate Ukraine Caucus Co-Chair Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Vice-Chair Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) co-wrote a bipartisan appeal to Ukraine’s allies to “stand alongside Ukraine” (electronic version here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/12/24/rob-portman-jeanne-shaheen-us-must-stand-with-ukraine-against-russian-aggression/) ~~~~~~~ The last six months of UCCA emails can always be reviewed at this link: https://us13.campaign-archive.com/home/?u=c58102ff552092843267dbbb8&id=afe2bda69f We archive UNIS Action alerts on UCCA’s website at this link: https://ucca.org/unis Слава Україні! ~~~~~~~ http://www.usukrainianrelations.org/ https://www.facebook.com/ODFFU/ ~~~~~~~ Wesley Clark, during his 34 years in the U.S. Army, rose to the rank of four-star general and was named director for strategic plans and policy of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As Supreme Allied Commander and Commander in Chief of the U.S. European Command (1997-2000), he commanded Operation Allied Force, NATO’s first major combat action, which saved 1.5 million Albanians from ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. In August 2000, Gen. Clark was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. In 2004, the long serving and decorated warrior was a major contender during the Democratic presidential primaries and was considered to be on the short list of the party's vice presidential nominees. In 2014, Gen. Clark and Dr. Phillip Karber made several trips to Ukraine and authored the first authoritative assessments of what they both came to call “the Russo-Ukrainian War” that was unfolding. Phillip A. Karber is President of the Potomac Foundation and an internationally recognized expert in defense and national security matters. A graduate of Pepperdine University, with a PhD from Georgetown University, he has served in the U.S. Government as Strategy Advisor to the Secretary of Defense, reporting directly to him and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In academia, since 1978 he has been on the Adjunct Faculty of Georgetown University where he teaches courses on international conflict. In March 2014, the Ukrainian Government asked Dr. Karber and former NATO Commander, General (ret) Wesley Clark, to come to Ukraine to assess the military situation. Since then, the dedicated policy analyst has made 29 trips to Ukraine and spent over 180 days at the front directly observing the combat. His observations have been briefed to the U.S. Congress and a number of European Parliaments. Michael Sawkiw, Jr., is the former President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the leading representative organization of the Ukrainian American community. He was first elected President in October 2000 in Chicago and subsequently re-elected in September 2004 in Philadelphia. Since 1996, he has served as Director of the UCCA’s Washington, D.C. bureau – the Ukrainian National Information Service – and presently holds this position again. His key achievements in Washington have included the formation of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus in 1997; advocating the graduation of Ukraine from the Jackson-Vanik amendment; and, most notably, passage by the United States Congress of a bill to authorize the construction of a monument to the victims of the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide of 1932-1933 in Washington, DC. Mr. Sawkiw, concurrent to his work at UNIS, is the Chairman of the U.S. Committee for Ukrainian Genocide-Holodomor Awareness 1932-33, a national civic organization to promote awareness of the Ukrainian Genocide amongst the American society.
