5/14/2025, 1:04 PM
Summary of Bill S 555
Bill 119 s 555, also known as the Korean American Divided Families Reunification Act, is a proposed piece of legislation that aims to address the issue of Korean American families who have been separated due to the division of North and South Korea. The bill directs the Secretary of State to establish a national registry specifically for Korean American divided families, in order to help facilitate communication and potential reunification efforts.
The main purpose of this bill is to provide a centralized database where Korean American families who have been separated can register and provide information about their loved ones. This registry would serve as a resource for individuals seeking to reconnect with family members who may be living in North Korea or South Korea.
In addition to establishing the national registry, the bill also includes provisions for the Secretary of State to work with relevant agencies and organizations to assist in the reunification process. This may involve coordinating with the governments of North and South Korea, as well as non-governmental organizations that specialize in family reunification efforts. Overall, the Korean American Divided Families Reunification Act seeks to address a humanitarian issue that has affected many Korean American families. By creating a national registry and providing support for reunification efforts, this bill aims to help bring families back together and provide closure for those who have been separated for years or even decades.
