SECURE Firearm Storage Act

12/16/2023, 7:17 AM

Summary of Bill S 246

The SECURE Firearm Storage Act, also known as Bill 118 s 246, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The main goal of this bill is to promote responsible firearm ownership by requiring individuals to securely store their firearms when not in use.

Under the SECURE Firearm Storage Act, gun owners would be required to store their firearms in a locked container or with a locking device when not in use. This measure is aimed at preventing unauthorized access to firearms, particularly by children or individuals who may pose a danger to themselves or others.

The bill also includes provisions for penalties for individuals who fail to comply with the secure storage requirements. These penalties could include fines or other legal consequences for gun owners who do not properly secure their firearms. Supporters of the SECURE Firearm Storage Act argue that it is a common-sense measure to prevent gun accidents and reduce the risk of gun violence. They believe that securely storing firearms can help prevent tragedies such as accidental shootings or incidents of gun theft. Opponents of the bill, however, argue that it infringes on the Second Amendment rights of gun owners and could make it more difficult for individuals to access their firearms in self-defense situations. They also raise concerns about the potential for government overreach in enforcing secure storage requirements. Overall, the SECURE Firearm Storage Act is a controversial piece of legislation that seeks to balance the rights of gun owners with the need for public safety. Its fate in Congress remains uncertain as lawmakers continue to debate the merits and drawbacks of the bill.
