Summary of Bill S 2236

Bill 118 s 2236, also known as the Casualty Loss Deduction Restoration Act, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to restore the casualty loss deduction that was previously available to taxpayers who suffered losses due to events such as natural disasters, theft, or accidents.

The casualty loss deduction allows taxpayers to deduct a portion of their losses that are not covered by insurance from their taxable income. This deduction was previously available to taxpayers, but was limited in 2017 by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The Casualty Loss Deduction Restoration Act seeks to reinstate this deduction and allow taxpayers to once again claim it on their tax returns.

If passed, this bill would provide much-needed relief to individuals and families who have experienced significant financial losses due to unforeseen events. It would help to alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with repairing or replacing damaged property, and provide a measure of support to those who are struggling to recover from a disaster. Overall, the Casualty Loss Deduction Restoration Act aims to provide assistance to taxpayers in times of need and restore a valuable deduction that can help individuals and families recover from unexpected losses. It is currently under consideration in Congress and its fate will be determined by the legislative process in the coming months.
