12/15/2023, 4:05 PM
Summary of Bill S 19
The FRESH Act, also known as Bill 118 s 19, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The main goal of this bill is to address issues related to food insecurity and access to healthy foods in low-income communities.
One of the key provisions of the FRESH Act is the establishment of a grant program to support the development and expansion of grocery stores and other food retail outlets in underserved areas. These grants would be available to both for-profit and non-profit organizations, with a focus on increasing access to fresh, nutritious foods.
Additionally, the bill includes measures to incentivize the purchase of healthy foods by low-income individuals through the expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. This would allow SNAP recipients to receive additional funds for purchasing fruits and vegetables, as well as other healthy food options. The FRESH Act also aims to improve food education and literacy in underserved communities by providing funding for nutrition education programs and initiatives. This would help individuals make more informed choices about their food consumption and lead to healthier lifestyles. Overall, the FRESH Act seeks to address the root causes of food insecurity and promote access to healthy foods for all individuals, regardless of their income level. It is currently being debated in Congress, with supporters arguing that it is a necessary step towards improving public health and reducing disparities in food access.
