Summary of Bill S 173
Bill 118 s 173, also known as Ethan's Law, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress with the aim of improving gun safety measures. The bill is named after Ethan Song, a 15-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in an accidental shooting in 2018.
Ethan's Law seeks to address the issue of safe storage of firearms in households by requiring gun owners to securely store their firearms when not in use. This includes storing firearms in a locked container or with a locking device to prevent unauthorized access, particularly by children or individuals who should not have access to firearms.
The bill also includes provisions for penalties for gun owners who fail to comply with the safe storage requirements, in order to encourage responsible gun ownership and prevent accidents and tragedies like the one that took Ethan Song's life. Overall, Ethan's Law aims to promote gun safety and prevent accidental shootings by ensuring that firearms are stored securely and out of reach of unauthorized individuals. The bill has garnered bipartisan support in Congress and is seen as a common-sense measure to protect children and promote responsible gun ownership.
