Community Broadband Act of 2023
12/15/2023, 4:07 PM
Summary of Bill S 1197
The Community Broadband Act of 2023, also known as Bill 118 s 1197, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress aimed at promoting the expansion of broadband internet access in communities across the country. The bill seeks to remove barriers that currently prevent local governments from building and operating their own broadband networks.
One of the key provisions of the bill is the prohibition of state laws that restrict or prohibit municipal broadband networks. These laws, often pushed by large telecommunications companies, have hindered the ability of local governments to provide affordable and reliable internet access to their residents. By overturning these restrictions, the Community Broadband Act aims to empower communities to take control of their own broadband infrastructure.
Additionally, the bill includes provisions for funding and technical assistance to help local governments plan, build, and operate their own broadband networks. This support is crucial for smaller communities that may lack the resources or expertise to undertake such projects on their own. Overall, the Community Broadband Act of 2023 is a bipartisan effort to bridge the digital divide and ensure that all Americans have access to high-speed internet. By empowering local governments to take the lead in expanding broadband access, the bill aims to create more equitable and inclusive communities across the country.
