Summary of Bill HR 3862
Bill 118 hr 3862, also known as the Spent Fuel Prioritization Act of 2023, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the US Congress. The main purpose of this bill is to prioritize the management and disposal of spent nuclear fuel in the United States.
The bill outlines a number of key provisions, including the establishment of a new federal program to oversee the management of spent nuclear fuel. This program would be responsible for developing a comprehensive plan for the safe and efficient disposal of spent fuel, as well as coordinating with state and local governments to ensure that all necessary regulations are followed.
Additionally, the bill calls for the creation of a new fund to support the implementation of the program, which would be financed through fees paid by nuclear power plant operators. This fund would be used to cover the costs of transporting, storing, and disposing of spent fuel, as well as any other expenses related to the program. Overall, the Spent Fuel Prioritization Act of 2023 aims to address the growing issue of spent nuclear fuel management in the United States by establishing a comprehensive federal program to oversee its disposal. The bill is currently being debated in Congress, and its ultimate fate remains uncertain.
