Summary of Bill HR 3321

Bill 118 hr 3321, also known as the Defund Cities that Defund the Police Act of 2023, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The main purpose of this bill is to withhold federal funding from cities that choose to defund their police departments.

The bill states that any city that reduces funding for their police department by a certain percentage will be ineligible to receive certain federal grants and funding. This is in response to a trend in some cities across the country where there have been calls to defund the police in the wake of protests against police brutality and racial injustice.

Supporters of the bill argue that reducing funding for police departments can lead to an increase in crime and jeopardize public safety. They believe that withholding federal funding will incentivize cities to maintain adequate funding for their police departments. Opponents of the bill argue that it is an overreach of federal government power and infringes on the rights of local governments to make decisions about their own police departments. They also argue that defunding the police is a necessary step towards addressing systemic issues within law enforcement. Overall, the Defund Cities that Defund the Police Act of 2023 is a controversial piece of legislation that highlights the ongoing debate surrounding police funding and reform in the United States.
