Countering CCP Drones Act
10/4/2024, 7:57 PM
Summary of Bill HR 2864
Bill 118 hr 2864, also known as the Countering CCP Drones Act, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress aimed at addressing the potential national security threats posed by drones manufactured by Chinese companies, specifically those affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The bill seeks to prohibit the federal government from purchasing or using drones or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) that are manufactured or assembled in China or by Chinese companies with ties to the CCP. This restriction is based on concerns that these drones could be used for espionage or other malicious purposes by the Chinese government.
Additionally, the Countering CCP Drones Act requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to conduct a threat assessment of Chinese-made drones and UAS currently in use by federal agencies. This assessment will help identify any potential vulnerabilities or risks associated with these devices and inform future policy decisions regarding their use. Furthermore, the bill authorizes the Secretary of Homeland Security to provide grants to state and local governments to assist in the identification and mitigation of potential threats posed by Chinese-made drones. This funding will support efforts to enhance the security of critical infrastructure and public spaces against potential drone-related threats. Overall, the Countering CCP Drones Act aims to address the growing concerns surrounding the use of Chinese-made drones and UAS in the United States, particularly in relation to national security and the protection of sensitive information. By restricting the use of these devices by federal agencies and providing support for state and local governments to address potential threats, the bill seeks to safeguard against potential risks posed by Chinese-made drones.
