Terminate TikTok on Campus Act of 2023
12/15/2023, 3:53 PM
Summary of Bill HR 231
Bill 118 hr 231, also known as the Terminate TikTok on Campus Act of 2023, is a piece of legislation introduced in the US Congress. The purpose of this bill is to prohibit the use of the social media app TikTok on college and university campuses across the United States.
The bill cites concerns about the potential national security risks associated with the use of TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. It argues that the app could be used to collect sensitive personal data from American students and faculty members, which could then be accessed by the Chinese government.
If passed, the Terminate TikTok on Campus Act of 2023 would require all educational institutions receiving federal funding to block access to TikTok on their campus networks. It would also prohibit the use of TikTok for any official university or college communications. Supporters of the bill argue that it is necessary to protect the privacy and security of American students and faculty members. They believe that banning TikTok on campus networks is a proactive measure to prevent potential data breaches and cyber threats. Opponents of the bill, however, argue that it infringes on the freedom of speech and expression of students and faculty members. They believe that banning TikTok on college campuses is an overreach of government authority and could set a dangerous precedent for censorship of other social media platforms. Overall, the Terminate TikTok on Campus Act of 2023 is a controversial piece of legislation that raises important questions about national security, privacy, and freedom of speech in the digital age. It remains to be seen whether the bill will garner enough support to pass in Congress and become law.
