ATF Transparency Act
12/15/2023, 3:55 PM
Summary of Bill HR 1700
The ATF Transparency Act, also known as Bill 118 hr 1700, is a piece of legislation currently being considered by the United States Congress. The purpose of this bill is to increase transparency within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) by requiring the agency to provide more detailed reports on its activities.
If passed, the ATF Transparency Act would mandate that the ATF submit an annual report to Congress detailing the number of firearms traced by the agency, as well as information on the types of firearms traced, the states where the firearms were recovered, and the crimes for which the firearms were used. This report would also include data on the number of firearms dealers inspected by the ATF, the number of firearms seized by the agency, and the number of criminal investigations conducted by the ATF.
Additionally, the bill would require the ATF to make this information publicly available on its website, in order to increase transparency and accountability within the agency. This would allow the public to have a better understanding of the ATF's activities and how it is working to combat gun violence and illegal firearms trafficking. Overall, the ATF Transparency Act aims to improve the transparency of the ATF and provide the public and Congress with more detailed information on the agency's activities related to firearms tracing, inspections, seizures, and criminal investigations.
